Ozzy Osbourne: Who Is He?
Ozzy Osbourne first gained prominence in the 1970s as the leader of the legendary heavy metal band Black Sabbath, which produced such famous songs as “War Pigs,” “Iron Man,” and “Paranoid.” In 1979, he launched a successful solo career, attracting notice for his outlandish public antics and eliciting ire from conservative organizations. Early life:
Osbourne was born in Marston Green Maternity Hospital in the Coleshill suburb of Birmingham but grew up in the Aston neighborhood. Lilian (née Unitt; 1916–2001) was a non-practicing Catholic who worked in a factory during the day. As a toolmaker, John Thomas “Jack” Osbourne (1915–1977) worked night shifts at the General Electric Company.
Osbourne is the elder brother of three older sisters, Jean, Iris, and Gillian, and the younger brother of two younger brothers, Paul and Tony. The family resided in a small two-bedroom house on Aston’s Lodge Road. Since elementary school, Osbourne has been known as “Ozzy.”

At the age of 14, after hearing the Beatles’ first chart-topping song, Osbourne became a devotee. Career:
In 1967, Osbourne formed his first band, Rare Breed, with Geezer Butler. After just two concerts, the band disbanded.
Osbourne and Butler formed another band, Earth, with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward. In August 1969, they renamed the black band Sabbath and began to perform an intense blues sound with occult overtones.
In February 1970, the band released their self-titled first album, ‘Black Sabbath.’
The album garnered mixed reviews from reviewers but was a commercial smash.
In September 1970, spurred on by the success of their debut, the band delivered their second album, ‘Paranoid,’ within a few months. Numerous tracks on this album, notably ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Paranoid,’ became the band’s hallmark tunes.
